Once the only way to take lessons on guitar was to find an instructor in your area and sign up for courses. Usually instructors work with one student at a time, however sometimes they might have group sessions. This is still a good way to learn to play the guitar. The reason for this is because with an instructor, you are face-to-face with an expert who not only explains the techniques but demonstrates them and critiques what you are doing. If you are holding your fingers or hand wrong, they can easily correct the problem and show you the right technique.

These days, however, finding a guitar instructor is not the only way to take lessons for guitar. You can teach yourself with instructional DVDs and even comprehensive online courses. There are online courses that come with CDs, DVDs, downloadable worksheets, sheet music, tablature and even live sessions via Web conferencing with an instructor. You should definitely shop around to find the best prices on online lessons and what they include. Some online courses cater to a specific type of music, for example some classes may be for electric guitar players interested in rock music while others might be for acoustic guitar players interested in folk or country.

If you are interested in truly teaching yourself, you should have some fundamental knowledge of guitar playing. It should be a natural talent that you can pick up, many self-taught guitarists can play pieces of their favorite music by ear. If this describes you, then it is likely you can use the free resources online to hone your skills. There are thousands of different guitar tablature downloads on every song available. Many guitarists find reading tablature much easier than reading sheet music however learning to do both is highly recommended if you are serious about your music.

Many beginning guitar students find lessons on guitar frustrating and slow at first. They are often frustrated because it seems they are getting nowhere, learning basic things like notes, chords and reading music. What you first start out playing is going to sound nothing like your favorite song. You will probably play the same notes and chords over and over again, until your fingers become sore.
