How To Play Guitar

There are a few different ways to learn how to play guitar and it is really up to you to decide what method works best for you. A lot depends on how much time you want to devote to the process. If you are fairly musical and play another stringed instrument, switching from one to another is fairly easy. Many people start out on one instrument and go on to play several. Many people have a good ear and learn to play simply by listening to music. Once you know some basic chords, you can play a good many songs.

Certainly lessons are a good idea if you are a complete beginner. You can take private lessons with a teacher or perhaps take group lessons in a class. One effective way to learn to play a guitar on your own schedule is try online lessons. There are many sites that offer basic instruction. If you watch late night TV at all, you have probably seen countless infomercials for guitar lessons on CD or DVD. They even have a program on QVC you can purchase. If you are comfortable working alone and don’t really need or want feedback from an instructor, these might be suitable. A lot of the online lessons feature some live chats and jam sessions with instructors if you prefer to work with others.

You don’t really need to read music in order to learn how to play a guitar. These days you can access guitar tablature on the computer. It teaches you by finger position rather than by notes in standard music lessons. The tablature resembles the neck of the guitar with frets and finger positions noted. There are thousands of songs you can learn this way. It is appropriate for beginners as well as intermediate and experienced guitarists. I think it is especially nice for beginners. They are always impatient to play a song right away and Mary Had a Little Lamb is not their idea of a song. I am no different. I always want to play something current and popular. Thanks to tablature, you do not have to be chained to weeks of playing scales and very simple music.

By whatever method you choose, once you learn the basic chords you can choose from thousands of songs to learn. When I first learned how to play guitar, I was very lucky because my brother was more experienced and helped me. Playing with him made learning so much easier for me and much more enjoyable. I’ll go ahead and admit it in print. He is much a much better musician than I am, but I still get a lot of pleasure playing my favorite songs and learning new ones.
