Guitar Music
Guitar music can take nearly any form. Guitars have been around a long time and can be used in almost any type of music. From traditional folk music, to rock, to classical, to jazz, the guitar is a versatile instrument. I was watching Antique Road Show last week and they had a guitar that was made from a cigar box. The creativity of the musician was amazing. He just used the materials available to him to make his guitar and it sounded pretty good.
In popular and rock music the guitar may be used in a couple of ways. The rhythm guitar provides the chord sequence or the beat and the lead guitar performs the melody, instrumental fill passages and guitar solos. These rolls may be covered by one guitarist in a small band. The electric guitar is most commonly used in rock and popular music, but the acoustic guitar remains a popular choice or folk, country, and bluegrass music. The popularity of games like Guitar Hero showcases the ability of rock musicians. Certainly rock has produced some spectacular guitar players.
Jazz and jazz fusion playing styles are very different from rock music. They include rhythm guitar accompanying with jazz chord voicing, walking bass lines, and improvising solos over jazz chord progressions. In rock and pop music, the rhythm guitarist sets the beat. In modern jazz styles, the guitarist may play much more sparsely. They intermingle chords and delicate voicing into pauses in the melody or solo. Jazz guitarists have to learn to use scales to solo over chord progressions. The solo improvisations need to have a rhythmic drive that creates a sense of swing or groove.
Classical guitarists favored the acoustic, nylon stringed guitar until the 1950s. Then a few contemporary classic composers began using electric guitars. In the 1980s and 1990s contemporary composers were often performers who had grown up playing in rock bands. They began to write classical music for the electric guitar.
No matter what kind of music you like, there is a place for guitar music. My brother started out playing strictly rock and roll. As he got a little older, he explored country music and finally settled on bluegrass and gospel. I started playing folk music at first and later played a little bluegrass. I would love to try classical music now that I have more time to practice. I think guitar music will always be popular due to its versatility.
