An Introduction To Guitar Chords

A very important part of playing the guitar is understanding guitar chords. A chord is a group of tones played at once. The tones can be on the same strings or different strings. The first type of chords for guitar you will learn about in any class are the major chords. These are called CAGED chords, with CAGED being an acronym for each of the chord names. Major chords consist of a root note, a major third and a perfect fifth. This may not make much sense on paper, but once you learn the different chords with an instructor or through a course it will become more apparent.

C Major is a chord that has three notes of C, E and G. A Major, G Major, E Major and D Major are similar as they are all primary reference chords. They are in the open position, which means they incorporate the first three frets and open strings. The two other Major chords are B Major and F Major. These are a form of extensions of the A chord and the E chord respectively. The difference between a minor chord and a major chord is that minor chords feature a minor third.

As you are reading this it may sound quite confusing, however when demonstrated by an instructional video or live instructor you will grasp the concept much more easily. When it comes to chords, guitar playing depends on them. Without them, there would not be much to the music we hear every day. Another type of chord you should know about as a guitar player is the power chord. These include the E5 Power Chord and the G5 Power Chord.

There are many ways to learn about guitar chords. Reading about them is one way to drum the fundamentals into your head, although you also need steady practice each day. If you are not taking guitar lessons, hop onto a site like You Tube and watch the chords being demonstrated, there are probably thousands of free videos where people demonstrate how to play each chord. You may find some videos are more helpful than others, depending on the quality of the video and how good of a teacher the star of the video happens to be. There are also online guitar courses that can teach you every aspect of playing the guitar, as well as free videos, downloads, tablature, literature and more.
