The acoustic guitar is an instrument that uses no electricity to produce sound. The sound is produced by the vibrating strings. An acoustic guitar amplifies the volume using parts known as a soundboard and resonant cavity. How it works sounds complicated, but is actually simple when you look at a guitar. The strings push the soundboard through the bridge causing a vibration, which increases the volume because more air is displaced due to its larger surface. If the volume is still not loud enough, the sound can be amplified using pickups or microphones.

If you take classes to learn how to play guitar, look for those that specialize in teaching acoustic guitar playing techniques. For the most part, the techniques used to play acoustic and electric guitars are the same, however some of the effects may be different. You may want to learn both the acoustic and electric guitar, it is advised to start off with the acoustic, from there learning how to play electric guitar will be a breeze because you will have the majority of the fundamentals down.

You can learn a lot about the acoustic guitar online. There are YouTube tutorials that teach you everything from basic chords to complicated techniques and even entire songs. You can find tons of free tablature. Guitar tablature, or tabs, are charts that indicate how to play a particular song. They differ from sheet music as they use a depiction of the strings with a number on each to designate where the fingers go on the guitar. There are online guitar courses, some of which offer web conferencing with an instructor. There are also how-to DVDs available to teach you how to play.
